Circuit Judge’s Summary Assessment of Costs dismantled by Court of Appeal

In a recent case before the Court of Appeal, a Circuit Judge’s summary assessment of costs was criticised as the Judge had not considered whether the money spent was “proportionate or justified”. The Circuit Judge had summarily assessed the costs of committal proceedings at £83,500 after contempt of court was admitted in relation to deletion of material on two USB memory sticks.
